He spent the entire season on injured reserve, so he decided to become a professional wrestler instead. His first match was against Angelo Poffo, brother of wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino, who was also known as "The Strangler." Phillips beat Poffo in about five minutes. Bum then went to work for promoter Verne Gagne, who had just signed Lou Thesz, who would later become one of the top stars in the world.

Bum trained hard for seven months for what turned out to be his only pro wrestling match; he ended up losing to Thesz. Afterwards most of his friends and family were afraid that he would be hurt in a ring and decided they were better off not knowing him anymore.
